Coding with Beebots @RRIS
This half term the Digital Leaders have been leading sessions writing algorithms for Beebots. They have been using direction cards to write out the algorithm before keying this into the Beebot. As the Beebot moves they have been checking that the algorithm is correct and identifying any place where there is a bug. They set … Continue reading
Kodable Hour of Code @RRIS
Following on from the success of last weeks Hour of Code the Digital Leaders used Kodable, another block based website to create their own maze problem. “This website is great and the challenges are slightly different from the one we used last time. I like that I can make my own challenge for someone else.” … Continue reading
Hour of Code @RRIS
This week the Digital Leaders completed their first Hour of Code on the Code.org website working their way through Course B. Having already had experience of programming using blocks in Scratch they enjoyed using Blockly to complete the challenges. “Using the loops block makes it easy to do the same codes over and over again.” … Continue reading
Trialling Coding Websites @RRIS
This week the Digital Leaders tried out some coding websites. First of all we looked at the free j2e turtle tool and programmed each of the different sprites on the 7 different template backgrounds. There were some surprises when you landed in certain squares. Next we explored the Beebot Emulator and were surprised how much … Continue reading
Scratch Jumping Game Step 5 @RRIS
After all our hard work the game is finally finished! We added a score keeper from the Scratch video and we also decided that we needed to have a countdown timer so that the game didn’t last too long and it was just perfect! We did a carousel so that everyone played each other’s games. … Continue reading
Scratch Jumping Game Step 4 @RRIS
This week the digital leaders learnt how to add an additional obstacle for the sprite to jump over. We used the right click to duplicate the existing obstacle so it had exactly the same code attached. We then added extra code so that the second obstacle appeared later and hid until needed. We tested our … Continue reading
Scratch Jumping Game Step 3 @RRIS
This week the digital leaders learnt how to stop the game if your sprite touched an obstacle (second sprite) instead of managing to jump over it. We also added code to ensure that the sprite returned to the home spot each time the game was reset. “I had to remember to check I was writing … Continue reading
Scratch Jumping Game Step 2 @RRIS
Sadly this week I was unable to run digital leaders, if you have been following along at home, here is the next step which involved adding a moving obstacle for our sprite to jump over.
Making a Jumping Game in Scratch @RRIS
This week the Digital Leaders started their jumping game using the coding programme Scratch. Last week we explored the programme so that we knew where all the functions were which made it easier for us to get started straight away. We are following a video tutorial made by Scratch which is accessible on Youtube here … Continue reading
An Introduction to Scratch @RRIS
This week the Digital Leaders had an introduction to a new coding programme called Scratch. This half term we will all be making a jumping game which children can customise themselves. First we explored all the different characters (sprites) that could be used in the game and all the different backgrounds (backdrops) that could be … Continue reading
